I know that most of us think that summer is the time to just turn off the engines and relax, but I beg to defer. Summertime, because of its relaxing and sunny character is the perfect time to breathe in the good weather and vibes and get creative. Because we feel more relaxed during the summer, stress is lower and therefore, productivity is, actually, higher.
This summer, I am encouraging you, just as I do my clients, to plan ahead for your next big project. The secret to this is to keep having fun while planning, which is truly very simple and easy to achieve. I am a strong believer of the fact that if you enjoy what you do, then it’s definitely not work! It’s a hobby with perks and benefits! So, go to the beach, have an iced cold beer or cocktail and start day-dreaming!
Of course, I would never leave you only on a thought and not give you some of my basic guidelines to achieve having fun while planning. Here are, my little secrets:
Boredom is often considered a bad thing, but really it isn’t! It is the best way to get creative. Boredom equals not having something to do equals the brain needing something to do equals the brain pushing for new things.
Good thing in summer things slow down, especially after July, since it gives you the right opportunity to embrace boredom. Some of the best ideas are born out of it. So, when the time comes don’t be annoyed by it, but rather embrace and enjoy that moment to have a daydream of what your new project or business venture should look like! Also, if you are thinking of starting a business, then use your boring times to imagine where you want to be in five years from now.
Note: It’s ok to be border sometimes! We all go through it, but there’s still a way to not waste that time!
The upside of holidays is that you get to go to different places and meet new people. This is particularly useful when you want to get creative since it gives you different stimuli and can enhance the creativity process.
By being aware of your surroundings you will identify several matters which need to be solved. Identifying this, can help you start thinking of a novel idea for your new project or business venture. Solving a matter is particularly important for the success of a project and a business, since the main ingredient to success is differentiation. It is also good to be open to conversations with the new people you meet. They are your target audience and their insight can be significantly important when it comes to designing your new project and venture, as it becomes targeted from the very beginning.
Note: Of course, make sure you have fun in the process!!
Of course, you will have your relaxing times during the weekend, and you will, and should, go on your holidays. Personally, I am at my most creative during those times as every single thing I encounter makes me think of new ideas (point 2 shows you how). So, using the above process, make sure you have your notebook with you and write down the ideas coming to you.
Seeing your thoughts in writing, makes it easier for you to separate the good from the not-so-good ideas. That way, when you start discussing with the people around you, you can actually ask the right questions and engage in joyful and helpful conversations.
By the time your holidays and summer are over, you will have concluded the top 3 and then you can start engaging in the implementation of the one which inspires you most.
Note: There is no dumb idea! Write everything down!
So, once you end up with your top 3 ideas, it’s time to get to planning. Write down the basic steps you need to follow to actually implement THE One Idea you have chosen. Some basic planning will include a timeline for implementation, a budget estimation, a market reaserch and the human resources you will need. Also, it would be good to have a look at how to promote this project or new business venture so as to plan ahead about the messages you want to get across.
By the time September comes, you will have, while you had fun and got bored, a bright new idea ready for implementation. No sweat, right?
Note: When I plan for my company, especially budget wise, I take the time to also find alternative sources of financing for the new projects, such as EU, co-financed and national funds. Let’s face it, one of the most important aspects to bring a project or business venture to life, is its financing.
I guess, what I am suggesting is for you to start thinking about your next big project/venture, during a time of sun, fun and a little more free time!
Enjoy your summer holidays!
